But windows application programmers are cheap. A custom OS means a far larger software team including firmware codes, that means a far more expensive product development.

Or you could use something like Linux but on a PowerPC or ARM CPU. That way you have a standard OS and GUI which makes development cheaper but avoid binary compatibility with the vast majority of computers out there and so are inherently more secure from the dangers of the internet.

Even then connecting to the internet seems like a very bad idea but at least you would have a bit of a head start.
