| That's a good argument for the US style of system, having to pass every year or get held back, except perhaps the kids in the next year down just end up with a bigger bully, armed with an extra year's frustrations. I went to a very old fashioned English prep school. Following the advice of one of my teachers (!) I wound up confronting the thug who'd been picking on me and took 3 years of being bottom of the pecking order out on him behind the cricket pavilion. The kid never gave me any trouble again, and the staff were spared the irritation of battles in class. As a trainee teacher I hasten to add that I'd never advise or condone such action, but as a victim of years and years of not fitting in and being needled and casually kicked in I think there's a great value to kids standing up and sorting things out with a little tacit adult backup. Just NOT WITH FLIPPING GUNS for the love of all things holy! I'd get on my high horse about guns and the American habit of having them about, but they seem to be sneaking into the British subcultures more and more too. Will I be given a flack jacket with my first appointment, I wonder? |
