over seems to count for more than the fight itself in many ways.

Look at how the Romans absorbed so many different peoples into their way of life, and many other historical settings that I am sure could be pointed out.

Fair treatment afterwards I think will go a long way to erasing or easing any feelings of resentment. It will not remove them entirely but, I think< will make the ground much less fertile for people to continue to be angry or combative.
