  Backstop question: by Classic_Jon 2008-08-22 12:03:51
In talking to several people I have gotten all kinds of different answers AND when I look it up online...it is pretty much the same thing.

Backstops for ranges around here seem to be made up mostly of Rammed earth with shredded tires in the middle.

The indoor range near me uses mostly shredded tires and will not allow FMJ ammo because it can punch a hole in their backstop over time. they related a story to us that they were inspecting the rifle range backstop after a guy fired several hundred rounds of FMJ and found that it had punched through the backstop and left a hole. The rounds had expended all of their energy and were lying just behind the main wall. After that they would not allow FMJ.

The outdoor range has a *large* Rammed earth berm that has shredded and whole tires in the middle. They will not allow FMJ either.

While I can see the reasoning behind the indoor range disallowing FMJ with what they described, What is the reasoning that they would not allow FMJ on the outdoor range that has a MUCH larger berm?
