When making the decision of whether to buy an acreage, the added cost of driving 50+ km. (30+ miles) both ways to and from work, every day, definitely came into play.

I estimated that it would cost us about $250.- extra per month then, and added it to the TCO - on top of the mortgage. It was still affordable, since acreages cost a lot less than the equivalent home in the city.

Nowadays, I estimate that it costs about $500.- extra. Good thing our wages have gone up since then :-)
