OTOH empty words and endless diplomacy get to situations like Darfur. Diplomacy is useless if it not backed by force.

How you treat your opponent after a war is just as important. WWII wasn't caused by the events during the WWI, it was caused by the actions of the Allies after the conflict. If Germany had been treated like the honorable foe that it was the hate and discontent that allowed Hitler to come to power would have not been a problem.

Also, if you are going to fight a limited war it should be limited. That means achieve your objectives and go home without any strings attached. The current mess in Iraq is more a product of the "post war" sanctions then anything else.

IMO, the real source of most of the worlds long term festering hatreds are caused by post war punishments, not the war itself.
