Someone with $1000 in the bank was super rich in 1900. Does that mean having $1000 in the bank today means I'm super rich too? Of course not.

The 'doesn't apply to me' bit is not useful either. Of course most people today weren't buying gas in the 60s. But family units existed, and they bought gas. Today, family units existed and they buy gas. There's a valid comparison in the average family unit between then and now.

And they agree with you that gas was more affordable ten years ago. Their point is that gas was ridiculously cheap ten years ago, but gas is still more affordable than it has been in the past. It may be going up, but we're not at the peak of unaffordability.
