I think it might have been better with smaller and more flexible companies than with the multi-national monsters we have to day. For example, most brand products cost the same no matter if they are sold 10 miles from the factory or 20,000 miles from the factory. That way the customer can't save money by looking for local products which have less energy and transportation costs, and so that costs are somewhat outside the regulatory effect of the "free market"
