It's the Iraqi government saying "We don't want you here after $date"
So, I guess my take is that we're not abandoning our commitments and responsibilities, we are being relieved from them. As soon as the Iraqi government sets a deadline, they are also setting a date on which they accept responsibility.
If we just up & pull out, as some members of our government have advocated, then we are just dumping the mess in the Iraqis lap, especially if we set a draw-down date without consulting and including them in the decision making. |
