of the population. I wasn't buying gas in the 1960's, nor was I trying to support a family, nor was I even capable of siring a family at that time. So saying it's more affordable for my family "now than it was in the days of the gas-guzzling muscle cars of the early 1960s" is utterly absurd. Perhaps it's more affordable for my father now than it was then, but he also earns twice as much as I do.
Granted, gas is more affordable for me now than when I first started my career, but my salary has increased significantly from an entry-level intern position to an engineer. Still not a valid comparison.
Gas is emphatically less affordable for me now than it was ten years ago; a greater proportion of my salary, today, is going into my gas tank than it did ten years ago. Let's add my other energy costs to that--natural gas and electricity--and see what it does to the proportion... hey, I'm paying two-and-a-half times what I payed for energy ten years ago, and my salary is only about 16% higher than it was then.
Gotta love that "inflation-adjusted" math. |
