What a stupid computer 'problem' by Control 2008-08-22 04:39:40
Almost embarrassed to tell you about this one...

My file-/media-/ftp-server/download box/general multipurpose box, a 9 year old machine, was starting to get sluggish/unresponsive when I tried to use the WebGUI from work. So I logged in with ssh, noticed that it had been running for about half a year, and thought: "What the heck, a reboot can't hurt."

So, reboot, wait a few minutes, try to log in again.
Nothing, no connection. Can't even ping the box.

That's annoying, but I can't do anything about it from halfway across the country. Unless....
I skype my wife and explain to her which box I mean, and get her to power cycle it. Still nothing.

I get home late that day, no time to look into the problem. Next morning, a few minutes before I leave for work. Basically just powercycling the box and listening for POST beep signals. All sounds fine, but still no login from the other boxen.
Ah well, off to work, and meanwhile I'm thinking of harddrives that might have failed, or something equally bad.

Evening, I decide to haul up an old monitor from the cellar, hook it up to the sick machine and see what's what.

WTF? Boot Menu?
Where's the keyboard?...Way back there on my desk...with a load of junk laying on it....that has been pressing F12 for the last month or so.
*facepalm*
