the big question is; how does one define a Political Action Committee, or a Lobbyist.
After all, I might be quite happy to see the Fossil Fuel industry, Big Pharma, Focus On Family and the NRA restrained in their ability to dominate the democratic process through direct contributions and through Media blitzes -- but applying the same restrictions to the Sierra Club, the ACLU, maybe even Move On, would rancle; I'm sure that many here would feel precisely the same -- but the other way around!
The tricky part is to come up with a fair way to promote diverse viewpoints and support mechanisms, that would robustly restrain excessive leverage of money and other forms of power, without disadvantaging legitimate expression or support from various quarters. |
