And it would be ironically appropriate. Trouble is, they're minors. They aren't considered even old enough to hold a job, in a lot of states, so any fine assessed against them is in actuality being assessed against their parents. So what's the likeliest outcome? Either the parents pay the girls' fines, or, if the fines are mandated to be paid by the girls directly, even an incompetent lawyer could get the fines dismissed.
Here's what I'd like to see: the court assess the fine against the girls, to be paid by the girls when they themsleves get jobs, with penalties accruing for every, oh, three months, say, that the fines go unpaid by the girls after their sixteenth birthdays. And the girls must present, along with the payments on their fines, their paychecks showing that it is their money, earned by their work, paying the fines. Not that such a judgment is actually likely to happen, but I think it would be nice to see. |
