Current governor. the belief is that with him on the ticket, Obama would win the state in November. Virginia is considered a "red" state in past presidential elections. Basically, it's the standard runningmate strategy - pick someone who will help "deliver" a critical state or region on election day. Not sure how he could hurt Obama except for the fact that it's a pretty obvious "tactical" choice, as opposed to a "balance the ticket" choice.
