They lose their credit rating. And their home.

The lenders are the ones that should know better. They have the expertise. I think the major burden should be on them.

Besides, penalizing people so heavily that they can never recover is not good for business, nor for anybody else. It is likely to encourage crime, and put a heavier burden on social safety nets. It is likely to cause people to despair - and thus lose what productivity they currently are able to offer.
