not to overanalyze a piece of fiction, especially if it's a good story. (Harry Potter was an interesting read - I finally just gave up on the dates being consistent.) On the other hand, I have gone so far as to create a chronology for Watership Down. (It begins on May 29th or 30th, probably of 1972 if my estimates of time periods are correct, and the main action ends about August 19th, with an epilogue about October 14th.)
