Have same problem with Naomi Novik. by werehatrack 2008-07-29 06:47:46
She has obviously never been up in an open-cockpit glider, or she wouldn't have dragon riders trying to communicate verbally. No mention is made of the dragons being anything but organic, but yet they can do things that are clearly beyond ludicrous in terms of load-bearing capacity. It doesn't get better from that point, either.

I much prefer authors who at least do their homework, and either provide some explanation for their impossibilities (be they hyperdrive or whatever) or just swap to a magic-enabled universe that's reasonably self-consistent. Novik did neither, and it chafed so badly that I had to abandon the series partway through the second book. (I excused a lot during the first one, but in the second, it became much harder as the number of absurdities just kept expanding.)
