Didn't some one say once to "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story."

Dirk Pitt is One of my heroes.

And for the record Clive Custler is an accomplished marine archeologist and has all the cars featured in the Dirk pit novels. And a certified dive master. He also is a self admited huckster. (read the first chapter of The Sea Hunters)

He is the founder of the real life NUMA organization. and has written 2 (to my knowledge) books (The aformentioned Sea Hunters With Craig Dirgo) on the real life work of said organization. Which works incluing working on the Zavala (Navy of the Republic of Texas ) and trying to find the Bonhomme Richard, And Most famously discovery and salvage and restoration of the CSS Hunley.

The Numa organization has on its board of directors

Admiral William Thompson
Commander Donnald Walsh (of the famous dive of the Trieste)
Col. Walter Schob.
