I was last on the list. Scheduled at five, didn't get taken down to the theater until after 8. The anaesthetist was a nice guy and we had a good chat on the ward beforehand, and he agreed to give me some anti-nausea stuff in my IV as my past experience has been bad. I was alright and released to go home with my mum after 11.30pm.
Saturday day was ok. Kept the ice on, ate some soft stuff, had only a little break-through pain in the afternoon. But in the evening I threw up a couple times. Knew things would only get worse if I couldn't keep any pain relief down...but was worried that it may be the drugs I was taken causing the vomiting in the first place. Took some regular paracetamol and went to bed. Did manage to sleep, in spite of some pain.
Woke up in the morning, took some more paracetamol and threw up again. My mum and I decided to hit the emergency room for help.
Sunday morning was HORRIBLE. While I wasn't throwing up after the single bout at home, I also hadn't taken any proper pain relief since basically early Saturday afternoon. The pain was horrible. And the emergency doc was SLOW. I got there before 9am, got triaged, got taken into the back area for further assessment etc.... Got a fresh ice pack after an hour, watched the guy who arrived at the same time as me get looked at and given pain relief and lay there feeling miserable and wondering if they'd forgotten about me... My mum waited outside at first but came in to see me probably around 10.30 or 11. I sobbed out that I hadn't been assessed yet or given any pain relief and she went off to ask the doctor or nurse or anyone she could find when I'd get seen... Within 20 minutes the doctor then came and checked me properly. Made sure there were no other apparent reasons for me to be throwing up and finally said "ok so we'll hook up an IV and give you some fluids and Maxolon for the nausea". And so about three hours after I'd been taken into the back area, they hooked me up. But still no pain relief at this point. The doctor said she didn't want to give me morphine because it would make me drowsy. I was too out of it (due to the pain!) to complain. Ack. So I finally got told to take some of my panadeine forte at about 12.30pm, when they kicked me out and sent me home. Yes, the Maxolon was helping with the nausea and the bag of saline helped me not be stupidly dehydrated, but I generally wasn't impressed with the lack of attention to the pain I was in. Surely there are other IV options to morphine... heck, I know there are, because they gave me some IV pain relief in recovery on Friday night and it wasn't morphine!!
Bah.
So I got a script for tablet Maxolon and went home. Ate something. Pain relief finally kicked in. Slept. Ate something more that evening but threw up again. Went to bed feeling completely miserable. Got up at 4am to eat some jelly and take more forte.
Thankfully woke up Monday feeling more human and have been steadily improving since then. Still have a lot of pain if I'm not careful about taking the codeine on time. Still can't eat anything more solid than mash or puree.
Heading back to work tomorrow. Not sure how that's gonna go. Going to at least put in a morning of work and will come home in the afternoon if I have to. Need to go prepare my mashed/pureed food to take with me, actually... |
