Never let a human do what a machine can do better. I write automated test software because even with eighteen years of experience I can never replicate the repeatability of a machine. Humans on the other hand get tired and make mistakes. They are also far more likely to cheat if they can get away with it.

Optical scanning is a mature and reliable system. It also leaves a hard copy of the ballot to review if there is a question.
