The town of Dayton, Tennessee put Scopes on trial in order to get publicity for the town and Scopes was a willing participant and even urged students to testify against him. I suggest you stop taking history lessons from fictional stories like "Inherit the Wind." A little bit of research on Wikipedia will give you a more accurate history lesson.
