| RMS, speakers, marketing and lies... |

RMS is a sensible method of measuring speaker output, apart from the fact that peak power can be a LOT higher. Marketing people like quoting peak power, because it's a large number. They'll generally find the biggest spike they can and call that the speaker's "power". RMS provides a good guide as to how much the speakers will cost in terms of electricity bills, because it's an "average" which ignores the fact that the actual mean power consumption is zero (thanks to speakers using alternating current, by their nature).
Exhibit B is therefore peaking at a theoretical 280W, but that is a transient; if that level of consumption were sustained, the speaker would be destroyed. Sustained consumption is 5W.
Same for Exhibit A. It's all being quoted in transients, because marketers don't understand physics or anything much beyond "bigger number means better". |
