Can you have a 120 Watt USB speaker?? (Let's call this Exhibit A.)
Also, could someone please explain THESE - or rather, how a speaker can have a rated power of 280W... but only 5 Watts RMS? (This can be Exhibit B.)
As far as I was concerned 1 Watt of electric power was caused by a current of 1 Amp flowing through a potential difference of 1 Volt. But the USB specification only allows for a current of 500 mA at 5.25 V, giving a MAXIMUM possible power of 2.625 W [1]. So Exhibit A is obviously doing something wrong and I wouldn't connect them to my computer!
As for exhibit B... I honestly don't have a clue how it can have a power of 280 W, but only 5 W RMS.
Something tells me the manufacturers aren't being entirely honest here. Anyone care to explain what's going on?
