Talk about things happening for a reason... by schwing1 2008-07-10 13:59:36
I turned in my notice today and as expected, I was walked. They are going to keep me on the payroll for the next two weeks with pay, insurance and accumulating vacation time (which will be paid at the end of it all). I called SWMBO and we went out for lunch and headed home. It had just stormed really bad while we were at lunch and the power was out. I couln't get into the house so we walked across the cul-de-sac and visited with the neighbor who was sitting on his porch watching the rain. Not even five minutes after sitting down, lightning hit the house between our two houses.

The one of the neighbors of the house that was hit normally works from home so we ran over and made sure she was not home, she wasn't. About then, we noticed flames coming from the top of the house where the lightning hit. Clay called the owners while I called 911. The full fire department was there in 5 minutes (we live in a small town) and on the roof shortly after. They used a minimal amount of water and had it out with very little damage to the house.

The chief told the owners that had we not been there and called so fast that the house would have probably gone up in 10 minutes. The department tarped the hole in the roof, laid a tarp before cutting into the attic fire access and felt really about having to break into the house via the garage service door. They even wiped thier feet before going into the house. So far, they have noted a hole in the roof from the lighting, a few fried cooling system controllers, a network switch cooked and some damage to the gutters and soffits.

The scary part is that it looks like the jolt ran down the metal edging down the roof and came out the soffit where it looks like it was blown outwards. The exit point is directly above the den, where she would have been had she not gone into work.

The funny side of it was that when the power came back on, the sprinkler system reset and kicked off right after the fire was out. The neighbor asked the police if they were going to ticket him for watering on his off day, they chuckled and said he had a bad enough day already.
