Why did he do it? And, why did he brag/tell about it? I mean, otherwise how did everyone know he did it?

It sounds to me as if he deliberately did what he could to offend. And maybe that is what the responses to his actions are all about.

From the story linked to in the article, he now regrets it. I guess he really didn't know how offensive what he did was.

He knows now.
