| death threats are certainly *not* an appropriate response to the man's action, but to say that he was not at all at fault for what he did isn't appropriate either, in my opinion. Whether he knew it or not, he was committing what Catholics consider to be heinous abuse of one of the most sacred objects we have. I'm not sure I agree with the diocese's assessment of this as a "hate crime;" that depends on his understanding of the status of the Eucharist at the time he did this. At this point, however, I do believe he owes an apology for what he did (assuming he now understands the Catholic belief regarding it) - just as he is owed an apology for the physical mis-handling he endured. |
