Political question, but not for US Election thread by ag__wyvern2008-07-10 10:51:47
Many questions... by werehatrack 2008-07-10 11:35:02
My opinions have, on the subjects cited, not changed as far as I can recall during the time period cited.

I cannot say that anyone has managed to persuade me to change my opinion in any debate, nor can I document that I have changed the opinion of anyone else in any dramatic fashion; a few might have shifted a millimeter as a result of pointing out gross logical inconsistencies, but I don't think my effect has been measurable even on a local scale.

I have always regarded it as a genuine asset when someone has evidenced the willingness to admit that a mistake has been made, or that the nature of the situation has shifted, requiring a change of policy, procedure, or position; this is particularly true of those in public positions. I consider the entire "waffling" thing to be mindless partisanship, no matter who is using it, though I can't bring myself to criticize those who fling it back in disgust at the ones who have used it with the least basis.

As for why politicians are "held to a different standard", I contest that assertion. *SOME* people hold them to a different standard on this issue, and I call those people STUPID. That this tendency is sufficiently common to be perceived as te overall approach is part of the problem, and the infotainment industry is at least as much to blame for propagating this Big Lie as any of the politicians and lackeys who have spouted the nonsense.

I would also like to point out that when a politician changes course merely for the sake of preserving the interests of his powerful friends, THAT is justifiably cause for everyone to call them on the carpet and demand an explanation.

There's admitting a mistake, and there's the lie of convenience, and there's the flip-flop to pander to the highest bidder; the three should not be confused.
