Political question, but not for US Election thread by ag__wyvern 2008-07-10 10:51:47
Non-political question first: Consider your opinions on things like the war in Iraq, gun control, abortion rights, gay marriage, urban densification, local transit planning, highway construction, etc., etc. Now... are your opinions on all of these issues the same as they were last year? Four years ago? Ten years ago?

When engaging in water cooler debates, forum threads (like these ones), listening to Toastmaster presentations, attending lectures, listening to debates between learned (or not so learned) individuals on these topics... have you ever altered your opinion? Have you ever altered someone else's opinion? If you *did* alter their opinion, does that make them less trustworthy because they were willing to adapt? Does it make *you* less trustworthy if you were the one who changed?

Now the political question: Why is it that politicians are held to a different standard? Why is it that a politician is *not* allowed to change hir mind on a subject? It seems like every time a politician changes their opinion on something, it's seen as 'flip-flopping' rather than an evolving viewpoint?
