Parental rights by Pyralis2008-07-10 09:25:12
There are *far* too few facts to say either way by ag__wyvern2008-07-10 09:58:29

...it seems to me like you still come down on the side of "don't spank your kids" and are presenting evidence about your child to explain why other people don't need to spank their children. First of all, if this is NOT what you intend, then my apologies for misunderstanding.

While I can appreciate that you managed to raise a good child (taking your word since I haven't met him) without spanking, that doesn't mean other children will react the way your son has, even if raised the same way. There's no guarantee that another child raised by you in the same way would react the same way.

(The rest is NOT directed at you, ag_wyvern, but at the situation in general.)

I firmly believe that spanking should be the last option, and that a child should be taught the values and behaviors that will a child to understand reason and fairness, and allow a parent avoid spanking, as early as possible. But spanking must remain an option, because not all children can be taught all lessons through reasoning. I certainly DO NOT believe that all parents should spank their children, and if it turned out that a minority did, and the children learned the proper lesson from it and turned out happy and well-adjusted, I'd be very happy. The less spanking, the better, as long as children learn self-discipline from whatever externally imposed discipline is used without physical or undue psychological damage.

(I say "undue" because any change in behavior that comes from outside could be construed as "damage" under the right circumstances, and while some people will likely laugh that off as "head-shrinker mumbo-jumbo", a roughly equal number of people will latch onto it and claim that all corporal punishment inflicts undue damage. The only thing I think these two groups have in common is that they are completely and utterly incapable of seeing another's point of view.)

Spanking just needs to remain an option, if used responsibly and with careful judgment, and it should be the last option. In public is not the best place to do so, but sometimes it can be the only choice. *IF* indeed the mother was merely spanking her daughter and not using undue force, then the statements of the eight people served merely to attempt to force their personal opinions on her, and the officer merely enabled some good ol' fashioned "sticking your nose in" behavior.
