Practically all energy on Earth can be traced back to the Sun somehow. The machines must have been feeding the human "batteries" with something, but where did they get the energy to produce that food. And there was certainly a loss of energy between what they fed the humans and what they could harvest.

When you apply the law of conservation of energy, the entire trilogy falls apart.
