Fossil fuels is the exploitation of potential energy put in through photosynthesis.

Hydro-electric power is the exploitation of kinetic energy from falling water. Evaporation is the mechanism that puts the water back at the "top" of the "hill".

Wind power is the exploitation of kinetic energy from temperature differences.

Nuclear power is the exploitation of potential energy at the atomic level put there by another star going super-nova.

Even tidal power isn't possible without a star at *some* point.
