Did you clear the soda with your Doc?
I know that when my doc wants me to fast (which means nothing but water for 12 hours prior to the test), I'm not allowed anything but clear liquids.
No soda (not even 7-Up/Sprite), tea, coffee, "energy drinks", caffeine, milk, alcohol (any, much less Zima), fruit punch, fruit juices (not Apple, not pear, *nada*)...
*Didly*.
I can have clear soup broth, but ONLY if it specifically has as close to zero salt as possible, no artificial colour, no sugar, low/no fat, blah blah blah.
(Which means no beef, pork, or chicken... What's that leave?)
No "Ensure", no Carnation Breakfast, nothing except clear water.
Flavoured water is fine, but only if it doesn't have any sugar.
So if your Doc wants your system flushed with nothing but clear liquids, anything that might take away the hunger pains is probably also verboten.
Your best bet is to gnaw on inedible objects until the test, then try REAL hard not to go out to the closest restaurant & eat everything that even remotely resembles food.
(It results in a MASSIVE stomach ache that will probably leave you barfing up your spleen.)
I'm not even allowed to *chew gum* before my tests.
I'm Diabetic, a 12 hour "fast" means I don't take insulin for that period either, and THAT can prove *lethal*.
And yet my doc still wants that frelling HgA1C test every 6 months.
"Hey DOC! How about you figure out how to keep my BSL from dropping like a rock from lack of food/insulin in my system, and THEN having me fast for your test? I don't particularly enjoy the DKA-coma precursor-signals my body gives me when i refuse to give it insulin for EIGHT HOURS longer than I typically eat/test/inject."
So check with your Doc, make sure the soda's ok, and ask them what you can do to ease the gnawing.
Maybe yours will be a bit more humane about it.
