Two 2x4s braced diagonally against the load above, on each side of the fence, would likely have held the load while breaking out the block, if, for some inscrutable reason, this method was to be preferred to actually taking the load down a block at a time from the top, down.
Ammendment to the Engineer's Credo:
If it can be built, it can be destroyed, and there are a few right ways and many, many wrong ways to do so.
