| It's the whiny part that's the hardest! |

It seems that almost all kids will try to whine, but the difference appears to me to be whether they are allowed to get away with it consistently. I work with 2-3 year olds every week, and whining is my least favorite part of that age. Makes my ears bleed. It's even worse than potty-training. Potty-training has a beginning and and an end, but whining can get integrated into how the child interacts with everyone for life! Ever heard a whiny 18-year-old? Scary stuff...
My son is moderately autistic and didn't speak until he was 3.5. So, I thought (quite naively) that we'd just skip over the whining thing and go straight into being a 4 year old. Wrong! He tried (and still does at times) to whine with full 4.5 year old force and volume and temper. Hubby and I just look at him and say calmly "Excuse me?" and unless he's in bodily danger, he gets nothing until the whining ceases.
Granted, if the whining is because the fluorescent lights in the grocery store are flickering and giving him a whanging headache or some other autism-related thing he can't control, he gets a brief pass on whining while we fix the problem. Once the situation is fixed, though, no more whining. And, if he's whining for another cookie or nonsense like that, no dice. I have to brag and say that over the last Christmas Gimme season, my boy was the best behaved kid in Walmart - one benefit of our no-whining policy and his relative immunity to U.S. kiddo pop culture.
As for irrational, I think that's somewhat in the eye of the beholder...try decoding autistic non-verbal behavior for a dose of irrational. Needy - yeah, that's tiring, but rewarding when you teach them to do something for themselves and you see the progress. Noise & chaos, well, that's just life, IMHO, even without a child :) |
