The US has changed standard calibers before (.45 ACP --> 9x19) so I don't think that changing to another round again would be such a problem. I don't think infantry soldiers will want to keep it so their sidearms can only be pointed at the face. I saw what an MP7 do to a combat helmet and some body armor that stopped a bullet from an MP5. Also, military and law enforcement units are using and adopting both the MP7 and the P90.
