"Upkeep" isn't the issue. "Replacement" is. by bwkaz 2008-06-08 12:49:41
The only upkeep it would ever need is new batteries, and I can do that. I got the thing for free (well, for the cost of a pair of batteries: the ones in it wouldn't hold anything resembling a charge). The company that originally bought it had realized that it wasn't working properly anymore (which was because the batteries were so old), and replaced it with a larger and newer model. I found out about this, and picked it up -- after getting a pair of batteries and running a full recalibration (hook up a 20% load, then let the UPS run on batteries until they're completely dead; the microcontroller inside then realizes that its calibration data is completely wrong), it started working fine.

And the reason that I have a UPS at all is because we lose power, too. Surge suppressors don't do squat when your power goes out. (Or browns out, for that matter.)

Also, see my response to vampire on the inductor/capacitor. :-)

If I could replace the surge suppressor part of the UPS, I'd junk the independent suppressor -- that would be fine. But I'd rather not replace a $500 UPS that I got for (almost) free in the first place.
