Chances are that the surge suppressor uses inductors (cheaper and easier for a dedicated surge-suppressor), while the UPS uses capacitors. Both of these on the same line might actually cause surges; at best, they would even the line out enough that the surge would not have as dramatic of a rise, thus not triggereing either device, and instead frying your computer. Not to mention that in that situation, you won't be able to claim insurance from the UPS or the surge suppressor company, since both say not to do that. On the other hand, if the UPS is fried, there's a chance you may get some money back on it anyway.
In the long run, it's not worth it. If you don't have the funds to upkeep the UPS, it's not worth owning. Just backup often and keep the receipts from the surge suppressor, so you can get that money back... |
