an idea of what happens.
IIRC, surge suppressors typically use a series of capacitors (possibly in conjunction with inductors) to detect a surge. A capacitor will charge a dissipate with certain characteristics based on its size, the frequency, etc and have to be carefully designed to be able to detect a surge. If you plug-in multiple surge suppression devices in series you change the characteristic behavior of that electrical circuit. I believe in this case that you will cause the surge suppressor to be unable to detect smaller surges and also slow its response time to the surge (it will take longer to trip and increases the risk that damage may occur). Typically a UPS protects equipment worth significantly more than the UPS and you won't always loose the UPS either. But, better to loose a $500 UPS than $5000 in computer equipment.
If you are concerned about a $500 UPS taking a hit, then you shouldn't have bought it. My advice, go buy a new surge suppressor, use it by itself, unplug the UPS and put it in a closet. |
