then what? Again, why destroy a $500 piece of equipment? (You can't replace *just* the surge suppressor out of a UPS, you have to replace the *whole* *thing*.) Oh, wait, because the UPS manufacturer said to; oh, I get it now.

Yes, that's only partially serious. It would not surprise me *in* *the* *least* if UPS manufacturers were saying this just to get people to buy new UPSes.

But I should note that I don't know how this particular surge suppressor and UPS are wired (and for that matter, given the age of the UPS, it may not have a surge suppressor of its own, either: SmartUPS 1250s are fairly ancient), so I suppose interference may be possible. I've never seen an explanation *why* (and *how*) they'd interfere, though; I've only ever seen people saying "you shouldn't do that; the manufacturer says so".

And when the manufacturer is trying to sell more of their stuff, because that's what they do, that kind of explanation seems fairly worthless...
