I have the expensive UPS plugged into the cheap surge suppressor because if there is a surge, the cheap surge suppressor will die, instead of the expensive UPS. Yes, the UPS has its own surge suppression, but if that takes a hit and dies (because its surge suppression can only sink a maximum total amount of energy, just like any surge suppressor), the whole UPS is rather useless, because now it won't run anything anymore. I'd rather replace a $60-80 surge suppressor than a 1250VA APC SmartUPS that probably costs about $500. :-)

On 2: I'm pretty sure the power is split across two or three rails on this PSU, yes. I also believe that the video card is plugged into a rail by itself, so I don't *think* that's an issue. However, it still might be. I'll see if moving the connectors around any helps. Thanks!
