              That's one part. by werehatrack 2008-05-05 23:17:21
The global[1] issue, however, is that we persist in raising children instead of adults. Anybody here besides me remember when there was a class in 7th grade called "Civics", of which one part was a lengthy examination of why everyone had to take personal responsibility for their own actions? Now, too many people want to shield or block *everyone*, not just children, from various realities[2], like every hint of risk and every form of unpleasantness, "wrongness", and unapproved material of any kind...and then they wonder why people turn out to have unrealistic expectations, no defenses against ordinary risks, and screwed up attitudes.

[1] not in the geographic sense.
[2] the realities in question vary with the agenda of the person seeking to interfere with or "protect" others.
