Until you've been in the shoes of the person who was driven to that extreme, it's really not possible to say whether that was a factor. We've had several incidents down here which turned out to be cases of sheer terror on the part of the woman involved, often unfounded in fact but driven by the misperceptions that have built up because of the combination of the lack of structure in place to which women feel they can safely turn for assistance, advice, support and protection, plus the fact that in recent years there have been a number of public outcries and prosecutions against women who made various kinds of unsuccessful attempt to get out from under the burden they'd delivered. Last year, a considerable amount of advertising was done locally to advise women in that situation that they could safely drop off a newborn at any fire station, and that they would not be subject to any harassment or inquisition as a result; it seems to be having some effect. (There had been some discussion of including police stations, but it was pointed out that those both lacked the needed capabilities and would be viewed with considerable distrust by a lot of stressed-out women in any event.) CPS prefers not to make public noise about arrivals of that nature lest the life of the afflicted be made more complicated...but the program is counted a success from what I hear.
Of course, all of that is moot for women who must live with the strictures of certain subculture norms...but that's an issue which is both too specific and too broad to address via simplistic means. |
