But heaven forbid we should ever look backwards at what leads people to do such things.
I mean, if it's onerous to have a medical procedure (that yes, certainly, *should* not be used for birth control, but we live in the real world) due to things like consent and waiting periods, then I guess this depraved person, who shouldn't be reproducing is going to wind up having to carry the child to term. Not that Missouri has any of those sorts of restrictions on those sorts of medical procedures; I don't know the laws of that state.
And then, of course, if this depraved person didn't have any information available about contraception, but is nonetheless so depraved, how are we not to believe that she wouldn't be so depraved as to engage in nonmarital sexual intercourse? If the best we can do in our schools and our churches and our homes to encourage self-control is still not enough to arrest the breeding instinct, and there's no information on how to prevent the natural consequence of such congress, how are we not to expect this depraved girl to get pregnant in the first place?
Let's REALLY flop this on its ear. Think of knowing how not to get pregnant as knowing how to defend yourself against childbearing. From that perspective, those who would conceal such knowledge are preventing people from defending themselves and society against situations like this. And those who would deny or otherwise restrict access to certain medical procedures would also deny people the tools to defend themselves with in the event that a situation goes beyond that first level of control. Of course, prevention from it ever getting that far is primary, because in the event that things get out of control, even a careful, well-considered decision puts living tissue at risk.
Hmm. What would people say if the gun control crowd wanted to keep gun safety classes from being taught, because "it teaches people that it's okay to own guns that aren't officially sanctioned by the state, such as the police or military." The same thing that they say when we keep sex education classes from teaching about contraception, because "it teaches people that it's okay to have sex that isn't part of a relationship that's officialy sanctioned by the state, such as marriage"?
And denying a person the tools to protect themselves from a parasite because all life is sacred? Not the same as denying a person the tools to protect themselves from an invader because all life is sacred?
The linked story is the equivalent of, having found a burglar in your house, locking him in a closet and letting him starve and dehydrate while stewing in his own filth. Reprehensible. Inexcusable. But should we then ignore how things got to this point and not try to prevent similar occurrences? |
