The majority of people like slim athletic builds/figures (with muscles and/or curves as appropriate). When it comes to anorexics, the major culprit is the women's fashion industry. Most guys don't follow it and don't influence it. The major powers in the women's (high) fashion industry (catwalks and all that) are not the guys who read The Hockey News and Sports Illustrated. (Speaking of which, a look at the SI Swimsuit Edition won't reveal any anorexics, just the aforementioned slim athletic builds, with appropriate curves.)
There's a certain flavour of the straw man in many discussions of weight in the media. The usual slant goes along the lines of "look at all these anorexics (with pictures of anorexics) - why don't people like 'normal' figures?". The problem is that the 'normal figures' referred to are not the BMI 20-25 types, but rather the much heavier figures to which we are trending, although this is not directly stated.
It's not that the anorexics are preferred to the BMI 20-25 types. But that the BMI 20-25 types are preferred to the much heavier figures that are becoming the norm. However, many articles on the topic use slight of hand to conclude that we are preferring anorexics to very heavy figures, without directly stating what is obviously a silly statement. |
