My boss has me looking over the laptop of a friend's granddaughter. A cursory examination reveals that boot-volume won't mount. Given the model of the laptop and what I've read it's probable that this is a problem with the HD itself, but I can't really be sure. I'd like to be able to rule it out. We have a diagnostics package in-house but that runs off a floppy which (surprise, surprise) this particular laptop doesn't have. Is there a diagnostics package around somewhere that I can run off of a boot CD or thumbdrive, that will let me check the disk surface for errors in addition to the controler and read head?
If not, what's the long way 'round of doing that?
Free (as in "beer") is, as always, preferable. |
