It's unfortunate how we've set up our education system where, at the age of majority, very few high school grads have a skill that enables them to find work at a living wage. Especially since much of the heavy industry in this country has gone away.
Without so much as a trade school certificate, most will be making $6-$8/hr to start. In my state, you can't even wait tables at a restaurant that serves alcohol till you're 21- so much for another unskilled job that can net a half decent wage.
Even at 18, we don't offer most of our newly-minted adults much in the way of affairs to handle on their own! Puberty to "official" adulthood is a fair stretch of time, but in most cases you aren't self-sufficient anymore till at least 20 or 22. That's a long time from when puberty hits, to when you can *responsibly* deal with the consequences of your hormones. |
