... so I'll be going to bed now (am from Europe). I will read the comments again in the morning, trying to make sense of it, maybe posting another question tomorrow. the only explanation I can think of right now is that these cells take the illumination into account - since that is the only input they have anyway (information about reflected light as wavelength) argh. need to sleep and think about lights and colors and neurons tomorrow :-)
