If you know (by illumination of surrounding objects, for instance) the spectrum of the illuminating beam, perhaps this information can be used to make inferences about the true colour (i.e. when illuminated by white light) of the surface. This, of course, wouldn't be done consciously, but rather by hard-wired processes in the visual cortex.
