the visual cortex does do some postprocessing based on prior knowledge and surrounding colours. A commonly cited example is looking at the blue sky through a ceiling with tinted skylight panels. The brain can get confused by trying to interpret what it is actually seeing with what it assumes it should be seeing. The particular example to which I'm referring IIRC involved someone looking at the sky though a green tinted skylight from which one panel was working.

The brain does a whackload of postprocessing of visual information. What you "consciously see" is a far cry from the raw signals sent down the optic nerves.
