I read this as you don't feel you need backups because you've never needed them in the past. Now, has disk failure ever occurred in the past as well? My dad has the same philosophy regarding farm chemicals. He figures that if they haven't killed him yet, his handling techniques must be safe. I take great pains to avoid him during that time of year, as I subscribe to a considerably more paranoid view.
